The fire broke out at approx. 8 30 pm on Wednesday 21 / 0 / 3 / 2018.
The Metro hotel located on Santry avenue and junction of Ballymun road was extensively damaged.
Up to 60 firefighters and 12 appliances including hydraulic ladders raced to the scene . The fire started on the 13 floor of the high rise which comprises 15 floors. The hotel was built in 2006 and regularly accommodates guests arriving in Dublin from the nearby Dublin airport.
There are 4 lower floors belonging to the hotel and the remainder split into apartments It is believed that up to 200 persons were safely evacuated with no injuries reported and no lives lost . No fire service personnel were injured despite the fact that crews continually changed shift to replenish their breathing apparatus and enter again to bring this huge fire under control. It has also being said that the containment system within the hotel prevented the fire from spreading upwards to the top floors. Social media was filled with photos and videos of the fire as people took advantage of modern technology by using their phones to share online. Dublin fire brigade and the GardaĆ did tremendous work to evacuate and bring this blaze under control. A big thank you must go to them for their bravery and expertise in saving this building from being totally destroyed . A full investigation will be carried out to find the cause of this fire the largest in Dublin this year .
