Glasnevin Tower
**************** Glasnevin Cemetery *****************
This cemetery is located on the Northside of the city. It is the resting place of many famous Irish and foreign
people who did good for Ireland in it s pursuit for freedom and peace There is a high wall surrounding the cemetery with towers which
were used to prevent body snatchers in the 18th 19th Century. There was no burial ground for Catholics and so Daniel O Connell
pushed for a cemetery for burial of both Catholics and Protestants. Glasnevin was then opened in February 1832. Dublin s main street
O Connell street is named after him and a statue of him stands aloft at it s northern end with it s junction of Parnell street also in honor of
Charles Stewart Parnell. There are guided tours daily a restaurant and history section in the Cemetery Also a florist for fresh
flowers and mementos which can be purchased within the grounds Visit Glasnevin and take in the history of Dublin s past.
